Primary options

POAC - Primary Options of Acute Care

Primary Options (Auckland and Counties Manukau) is a service allowing doctors to access investigations, care or treatment for their patient, as an alternative to an acute hospital admission, where the patient can be safely managed in the community. It is a solution offered by primary care to manage the acute demand for beds in Middlemore, Kids First, Auckland and Starship Hospitals.

A range of community diagnostic, therapeutic and logistic services are provided at no cost (except the initial GP consultation) to the patient.

These include:

  • diagnostic procedures, X–ray, ultrasound, EGC, urgent bloods
  • extended service within the GP’s surgery
  • GP or nurse home visit
  • after hours referral to urgent care centre
  • intravenous therapy
  • transport to and from primary care locations.

The Primary Options service is an accessible and flexible service obtainable by contacting our office and completing a referral form. While referring doctors take full clinical responsibility, Primary Options provides clinical view for each individual episode of care.
