Pneumovax

Pneumovax is a vaccine used to help prevent infections caused by certain types of germs or bacteria called Pneumococcus.

Pneumococcal infection is an important cause of diseases such as

  • Pneumonia,
  • Meningitis,
  • Middle ear infection and
  • Infections of the blood.

Groups of people whose bodies cannot fight infection including people

  • With poor immune systems, 
  • Without a spleen,
  • With chronic heart, lung, kidney, and/or liver disease,
  • Who are diabetes, alcoholics, HIV/AIDS sufferers and
  • Who have had pneumonia in the past

may benefit greatly from this vaccine.

Your East Tamaki Healthcare Doctor or Nurse will be able to explain to you the benefits and risks of this vaccine, and whether you are eligible for a free vaccine. This vaccine is expected to provide you with protection for up to five years.

You will be expected to wait for 20 minutes after your vaccination to check for a reaction to the vaccine.
