Undergraduate Medical Training

East Tamaki Healthcare (ETHC) has been successfully hosting undergraduate medical and nursing students.

To date they have come from the University of Auckland, University of Otago, Auckland University of Technology, Manukau Institute of Technology, and Australian universities.

All our doctors are involved in this program; also, all of our clinics are accredited as Teaching Practices for the undergraduate medical training program. We host 2nd year medical students right through to Trainee interns (6th Year). We host on average 180 placements per year. We are in the planning stages to host PGY2 (Post Graduate Year 2) students.

ETHC is grateful and appreciative of these DiTs (Doctors In Training) who come to our practices. Their contribution goes beyond just seeing patients; they bring enthusiasm, freshness, excitement and new ideas. We learn from them at the same timev as they learn from us.

All ETHC Doctors in Training undergo an orientation program. We have designated staff who are charged with the overall responsibility of this programme.

We have two Key Performance Indicators

1 - To have a great time

2 - To become more comfortable with clinical uncertainty.

ETHC is the only organisation that recognises the contribution that Doctors in Training bring to the organisation and community. In 2008 we launched the "Dr Kantilal N Patel Values Award" - this is awarded to the doctor in training that has best displayed the organisational values of
  • Caring,

  • Sharing,

  • Devotion and

  • Worship.
