Otara Family Fun Day 2013

On Saturday 27 Jul 2013 East Tamaki Healthcare in association with the Otara Business Association organised the Otara Family Fun Day in the town centre. Timed to coincide with the Saturday markets, the Otara Music and Arts Centre (OMAC) 25th Birthday, and the end of the school holidays it was a fun-filled, action-packed morning for the whole family.

There was a fashion show with plus sized models by Kilas Style, healthy kai cooking demonstrations by Pacific Heartbeat and even a dance-off featuring Sgt Sonny Iosefo from the Flat Bush Neighbourhood Policing Team. Clinical Family Navigator Vaisiliva Vahaakola, Rheumatic Fever nurse Tafao Ah-Mau and Community Liaison Manager Joseph Liava'a were on hand to raise awareness around rheumatic fever prevention.

Rheumatic fever is a dreadful disease which affects mainly Pacific and Maori children in South Auckland, and can lead to huge problems with the heart. The important message to remember is

"Get your sore throat checked"
