Rheumatic fever
Rheumatic fever is a disease that may develop after an infection caused by a bug called streptococcus.
Sometimes a sore throat will be caused by this bug and, if left untreated, a strep throat can lead to permanent damage to a child's heart valves.
Treatment for rheumatic fever includes antibiotics and rest, and children may need to go to hospital. Regular antibiotics are usually needed for some years afterwards to stop the disease coming back.
